On October 3, 1967, Robert Resoff, owner of American Freezerships, purchases the ferry Kalakala. He plans to convert her to a new life as a seafood processing vessel in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

After retrofitting, the vessel was towed north the following summer by the tug Andrew Foss.
