Schwartz family settled in the Vashon community of Ellisport in 1930 in hopes that the fresh air would be better for their children's health than the coal smog in the city. During the Great Depression, many Puget Sound area families built homes with designs that required few construction skills, and made use of materials that could be obtained at little or no cost -- and often from the home site itself. The Schwartz-Bell house, a one-story pole frame log building sheathed in cedar log slabs, is an example of this type of Depression-era home building in King County.
